Putties are essential masonry tools used to apply small amounts of plaster, mortar, adhesives and mixtures to small areas and hard-to-reach places. They are an invaluable aid in finishing work.
Where and what are putties used for?
Putties are used in the performance of various construction operations:
- leveling surfaces by applying plaster or putty;
- removal of old coatings, paints, latex and wallpaper;
- laying ceramic tiles, mosaics and granite tiles;
- grouting, puttying, applying adhesives;
- preparing walls for painting
A good putty knife is a guarantee of quality work. It is a hand tool that saves time and nerves, so we must approach its choice responsibly.
WHICH PUTTY SHOULD WE CHOOSE?
There are two main types of this tool: facade putty knives and plastering putty knives. They differ from each other in the thickness and flexibility of the blade. Facade putty knives are designed for performing exterior finishing works, including applying plaster and cement mixtures. Therefore, they are heavier and larger in size. But this does not mean that they are not also used for interior finishing works. The sturdy blade of a good carbon steel putty knife practically does not bend, and the handle of a quality tool is rubberized and firmly attached to the steel part.
No finishing home renovation in a turnkey new construction or a quality renovation of an old home can do without the use of a putty knife. Its area of use includes puttying and final leveling of the surface of walls and ceilings. The putty knife is distinguished by a thinner and more flexible working surface that springs under pressure. Its biggest drawback is its low durability. Intensive work leads to bending and inability to use. For intensive work and large areas, a putty knife with a width of 40-60 cm is chosen, and a small auxiliary tool with a width of 6-15 cm is also purchased. The ideal option is to get a professional set of putty knives of different widths. However, if we have to choose only one tool, it is best to buy the longer-lasting facade putty knife.
Other types of putties:
Comb-shaped spatulas are used to apply an even layer of adhesive mixture. The presence of teeth eliminates unevenness in applying the layer and the overconsumption of expensive mixture. Depending on the type of work, a tool with different tooth sizes is selected. For example, for working with plasterboard, granite tiles and other materials requiring the application of a thick layer of material, spatulas with large teeth are used. For applying glue on ceramic tiles, spatulas with medium-sized teeth are used. Under carpet or linoleum, the glue is applied with a spatula with fine teeth.
The corner trowel is used to level surfaces at internal or external corners. It is rarely used because the perforated corner profile is more popular, which makes this type of work easier and faster. The main requirement when choosing an L-shaped trowel is that the angle between its two surfaces is exactly 90 degrees.
Rubber spatulas are used to apply grouting mixtures when laying ceramic tiles, granite tiles, mosaics. They are a whole piece of rubber that can be used not only for its intended purpose, but also to fill in dents and scratches on laminate. The rubber does not scratch either terracotta or laminate, even if considerable effort is exerted. Another advantage of using a rubber spatula is that it is flexible and repeats the unevenness of the surface well, allowing for an ideal joint.
Plastic putties and wallpaper putties are used to smooth wallpaper. With their help, the specified amount of work can be completed faster than if the material is smoothed by hand in the traditional way. Such a putty should be made of high-quality plastic without sharp protrusions and irregularities. Plastic putties are used for fine work when applying fine putties or when filling cracks and defects in surfaces.
