Generally speaking, pliers are a group of hand tools used for gripping, unscrewing, cutting, etc. Modern pliers are made of metal, with their handles wrapped in a soft plastic material for easier and more comfortable gripping or for insulation from electrical current when working with wires. There are many different types of pliers with different purposes. Regardless of their type, this type of tool has three main parts: handles, jaws and a fulcrum / hinge /. The main difference between all types is expressed in the type of jaws. Each of them has its own purpose.
TYPES OF PLIERS ACCORDING TO JAWS
- Adjustable grip pliers: they have different degrees of grip width. You can adjust it according to your needs. They are very often used by both professionals and amateurs.
- Pliers with fixed jaws: they are very strong and are most often used as cutting pliers. Those with long handles and short jaws allow for maximum grip with minimal effort. Therefore, they are particularly suitable for cutting chains, wire mesh and bolts.
- Needle-nose pliers: if you need to work on smaller objects or parts, don't start without these pliers. Otherwise, you're more likely to not be able to grip the part at all or damage it.
TYPES OF PLIERS BY TYPE
- Combined: this is a tool with long handles from 180 to 300 mm and short jaws from 30 to 60 mm. The jaws have several different surfaces. The front surface is usually flat and slightly serrated and serves for gripping. Then follows an oval-shaped cutout, used for gripping round parts and objects. The oval cutout has a sharp serrated surface that prevents the part from slipping, but with parts with a soft surface, this surface can be injured and damaged with great effort. After the oval serrated hole in the head of the pliers, there is a cutting zone, consisting of hardened blades of different shapes and bevels. Combination pliers are designed for gripping, clamping and cutting. In some of them, on the outside of the head near the axis of rotation, a hardened channel for cutting hard wire is located.
- Rebar pliers: their main purpose is to tie rebar using rebar wire. Rebar pliers are also used to remove nails, twist and cut wire into bundles, break off tiles, etc. The specific thing about this type is the jaws, which when viewed from the side, form a ring. In their front part, the jaws are pointed and this is the cutting part of the rebar pliers. They usually have long handles, which increases the cutting force, and their head is narrow so that they can squeeze into tight spaces.
- Plumbing: they are used to grip pipes, pipe elements, fittings and nuts. The jaws are usually concave and rounded in shape to fit over a larger part of the pipe's circumference. Most often, the jaws are serrated. The hinge mechanism is movable, which allows movement of one arm, so that the distance between the two jaws can be increased or decreased according to the size of the item being worked on.
- Crimping pliers: these pliers are used to manually press two parts together. Their jaw resembles a bird's beak. Therefore, in many places they can also be found as "crow" type pliers.
They are most often used for crimping connectors, cable lugs, coupling sleeves, sleeves, ferrules and sockets. They can be used to strip and cut various types of communication cables.
Crimping pliers are mainly used in electrical engineering, but also in pneumatics, hydraulics, water and steam installations and wherever there are hoses and tubes. There are also varieties where the pressing jaws are replaceable. Some models have a double hinge-lever mechanism, which increases the force applied to the handles several times.
TYPES OF PLIERS ACCORDING TO THEIR PURPOSE
- Flat: they have a flat working surface of the jaws, in most cases grooved. They are used for gripping relatively small parts, and at the same time for various manipulations of the gripped element (bending, slight removal of the surface, twisting, pulling, feeding, etc.). There are pliers with elongated tips, which can be with flat-straight or flat-rounded tips, which are used for working in narrow and hard-to-reach spaces. Pliers with thin and long tips are used for working with fine details, while those with shorter tips provide great gripping force. Some models have a coating on the working surface to avoid damaging the surface of the material and the parts being worked with. Others have cutting edges for cutting cables. The cutting blades are located in a shaped hole in the jaws, located near the hinge. These pliers are also called telephone pliers.
- Pincer pliers: they have sharp tips with a round cross-section. They are designed to work with pincers. They play the role of an important tool for mechanics. This type can have tips of different sizes and lengths, also with a smooth or grooved gripping surface.
There are two types of collet pliers – for external collets and for internal collets. Collet-closing pliers are used for installing internal collets in holes. Collet-opening pliers are used for installing external collets on shafts and axles. Collet pliers can have straight or curved tips. Curved tips have an advantage when installing collets in hard-to-reach places.
- Cutters: these are specialized pliers for performing mainly one operation, namely cutting. These pliers have a cutting working surface – blades or cutters. They are used for cutting copper and aluminum wires, soft and steel-coated wire, thin steel rods, multi-core steel twisted ropes. They can also cut other materials such as small rails, plastic rods, wooden sticks, etc. The variety of cutters is great. Depending on the location of the cutting edges in relation to the handles, we distinguish two types – front cutters and side cutters. Side cutters, in turn, are divided into several subspecies according to the shape and sharpening of the cutting blades – symmetrical, with a large chamfer, with a small chamfer, with a very small chamfer or without a chamfer.
The design of some of the cutting pliers is through a hinged-lever mechanism, which further increases the cutting force.
