Wrenches are among the tools that enjoy widespread and perhaps the most widespread use. They are leaders in application, regardless of whether they are manual or mechanized tools.
A wrench is a tool used in all branches of industry. For such seemingly simple operations as tightening and loosening nuts or bolts, there are many types of wrenches, and this is without taking into account the highly specialized wrenches.
There are many varieties of this tool. Each type has its own purpose, advantages and disadvantages.
BASIC TYPES OF WRENCHES
- Open-end wrench: When we talk about wrenches, we usually think of the standard open-end wrench. In this type, the nut is held between two parallel surfaces of the wrench, resembling jaws. The longitudinal axis of the head and the axis of the handle are located at an angle, which is usually 15°.
There are open-end wrenches with one head and shoulder, but today double-ended wrenches that combine two sizes are more common.
Open-end wrenches are widely used due to their versatility and simplicity. Of course, they also have their drawbacks. For example, the fact that the jaws have two small contact areas located near the corners of the nut. The force in these two areas tends to crush the corners - if the gap is a little larger, the wrench will press both corners and, with significant effort, damage them, which can lead to twisting.
- Star wrench: The star wrench is a more perfect type than the open-end wrench. Its design does not have the main disadvantage of the open-end wrench. The head of the star wrench covers the entire nut and during operation the load is distributed over all six surfaces of the nut or bolt, i.e. instead of two contact areas, we have six. The head of the star wrench is smaller in size compared to the open-end wrench for the same nut and in general.
- Wrench: It can handle a wide range of nut and bolt sizes. It is an adjustable-width wrench that belongs to the group of specialized wrenches. It is used more often in everyday life than in professional activities. In these wrenches, the opening of the jaws can be changed, which allows a whole range of standard and non-standard-sized nuts or bolts to be screwed or unscrewed with one tool.
- Combination wrench: This type combines an open-end wrench and a star wrench on one arm. Usually, the two wrenches are the same size. Combination wrenches are also called combination wrenches. They overcome the disadvantages of each of the two types of wrenches separately.
- Star-type ratchet wrench: This is a wrench whose working ring is located in a ratchet mechanism in the head of the wrench. The ratchet mechanism transmits torque in one direction (it is locked - it does not rotate), and in the other direction it rotates freely. Accordingly, when the wrench is rotated relative to the longitudinal axis of the arm, the direction of action of the ratchet wrench changes. In this way, these wrenches can be used both for screwing in and for unscrewing fasteners.
- Pipe wrench: A pipe wrench is a pair of pliers specially designed and used for pipe installation. This wrench is adjusted to turn cylindrical and other pipe fittings of various sizes by adjusting the support nut at the base of the movable jaw of the pliers. The pipe wrench is used primarily in plumbing work and is used to screw in and unscrew bolts and sleeves of various thicknesses.
- Other types: In practice, we often have to perform a given operation of screwing or unscrewing atypical threaded elements. For this purpose, we use wrenches, united in the group of specialized wrenches. They facilitate our work in repeatedly repeated operations or when working in places with limited access. Limited access means that the place where the nut or bolt head is located is not visible to us or is in a narrow space and we do not have the opportunity to move the wrench.
Allen keys and Torx keys are used when the screwing or unscrewing heads are designed in an internal configuration, which is most often hexagonal.
The Gedoreto is a set of wrenches that allows you to easily and quickly unscrew or screw in everything you need. The sets include many attachments in terms of type and size. This guarantees that you will cope with any task - no matter what nut or bolt you need to unscrew.
