The design of the hammer may have undergone some improvements over time, but its basic functions and scope of use have not changed. It is the most used tool not only in construction and repair activities, assembly and carpentry work, but also in everyday life.

COMPONENT PARTS OF THE HAMMER

The classic hammer consists of three parts: a head, a handle and a connecting node. The head of the hammer is the most important part of the tool. In its classic form, it is made of high-quality tool steel. The working surfaces of the hammer must be hardened. The striking surfaces are hardened in water, and if the tool has a bifurcated part, it is subjected to oil hardening. This different hardening allows the striking part to be strong, and the bifurcated part to be more elastic, which will allow it to withstand heavy loads when extracting nails, for example.
The striking surface of a hammer can have three classic shapes: flat, convex, and serrated. The flat surface is designed for driving nails, the convex one is used for striking locksmith tools, and the rough surface of the striking part prevents the hammer head from slipping on the nail.
The weight of the hammer head also plays a big role in choosing a tool. Every self-respecting craftsman should own at least three hammers of different weights.
The head of a quality hammer is always forged or stamped. If the head is cast, the hammer will not last long.
As already mentioned, there are also hammers with heads that are not made of metal, but of other materials such as rubber and plastic.
The handle of the hammer also matters when choosing. Its quality determines the comfort of work, the health of the worker and his physical exertion. This part of the hammer can be made of wood, steel, fiberglass or rubber.

TYPES OF HAMMERS

Today there is a wide variety of hammers for performing various works. When a person decides to buy such a tool, he usually does not ask himself how to choose it. He decides without much hesitation. But nowadays manufacturers provide us with a wide choice and an inexperienced buyer can get confused. Therefore, we will introduce you to the types of hammers.
The classic options are the locksmith and carpenter /goat leg type/.
A locksmith's hammer is a tool with two striking surfaces that have different shapes. On one side, the hammer has a flat striking surface, and on the other, a tapered one that resembles a triangle in side view. The pointed striking surface allows it to drive nails with very small heads, without heads, or in places that are difficult to reach with a wide striking surface.
The back of the carpenter's hammer has a split part. This is the main difference from the locksmith's hammer. This split part, which resembles a goat's hoof, allows nails to be pulled out of wood. The nail is pulled out with the shoulder, which is formed on the short side by pressing the long side of the hammer.
Different activities require the performance of different tasks. That is why there are hammers with special shapes that help the craftsman in his specific work. Such are, for example , mason's, shoemaker's, and formwork hammers .
In addition to "standard" operations such as cutting, bending, straightening and forging , the battle hammer is also used for demolition . It is an enlarged version of the locksmith's hammer, but not in the same proportion between the components, since in the battle hammer the length of the handle is in a greater projection relative to the head.
A rubber mallet has a rubber impact head. This tool is designed for gentle impacts on material or another tool. It is used, for example, when laying paving slabs.
The plastic hammer has a plastic impact head and is also used in activities that involve gentle blows to material or another tool.
A masonry hammer is used to change the size of bricks, building blocks, or other similar materials. It has a traditional hammer shape on one side and a flat "beak" on the other. Sometimes a dimension ruler is applied to the handle of a masonry hammer for quick sizing of blocks or bricks.
