Choosing lighting for the garden is just as important to its overall look as the flowers and plants we will plant, the paths we will design, the furniture we will put in. Garden lighting is one of the important elements in the exterior and design, which should be harmonious and reflect each individual style.
The yard and garden can easily become a paradise at night. Designed with enough style, garden lighting will transform the dramatic effect of the night into a romantic, sensual picture.
It is wonderful to spend warm evenings outside, in the pleasant company of family and friends under the clear sky and the enchanting embrace of fresh air. The cloak of night covers the colorful colors in our garden and turns them into vague shapes and bizarre silhouettes. But there is someone who can resurrect their charm even in the darkness. This is precisely the garden lighting that brings our favorite corners to life and illuminates them.
Garden lighting brings a romantic mood and a fairy-tale element to the entire yard. Its use is important not only from an aesthetic but also from a functional point of view. Well-designed exterior lighting implies more security for the home, significantly reducing the risk of theft. Its true function is determined, on the one hand, by providing the necessary amount of light for orientation in the dark and, on the other hand, by emphasizing the beauty of interesting corners in the garden and yard.
TYPES OF GARDEN LIGHTING. WHERE IN THE YARD AND GARDEN IS IT NECESSARY TO HAVE LIGHT?
It is imperative that the entrance to the property or the very edge of the yard be illuminated. This is achieved by means of unobtrusive light that should not disturb our neighbors. The path and the garden area are the next important objects where lighting should not be lacking in order to provide good orientation for visitors to the home. Lighting of ornamental shrubs, rockeries and trees will add a unique accent to the garden at night. With directed or diffused light, we can highlight an interesting statue, pergola, well or fountain. With lamps, we can illuminate an ornamental shrub or tree with an interesting stem and picturesque branches. Appropriately illuminated attractive details of the facade of the house will also bring refined charm to the appearance of the yard.
For lighting in the yard and garden, we can choose between the well-known conventional model (electricity) or solar lighting. There is also a third option, which uses live fire for lighting through torches and lanterns, but the maintenance of this type of lighting requires effort, and the risk of unintentionally starting a fire increases.
Conventional garden lighting requires a preliminary project regarding the positioning of garden furniture, architectural elements, sculptures and various types of plants, which we will subsequently want to emphasize with the appropriate lighting fixtures. This is necessary because the wiring is laid in pre-made trenches at a depth of at least 50-60 cm. If the cables are protected with a special plastic coating, they can be buried quite shallowly, otherwise we must first place them in PVC pipes. Widely used in garden areas, 220 V lighting is characterized by very good illuminance and brightness.
If we still don't want the garden to be brightly lit, but we want to be energy efficient and safe, we can reduce the voltage to a harmless 12 V using a transformer. This type of low-voltage lighting is sufficient to power halogen bulbs and LEDs.
GARDEN LANTERNS – MOST PREFERRED, ATTRACTIVE AND FUNCTIONAL
Garden lanterns are the most commonly used for exterior lighting. They are widely used because they are easy to install and affordable. They are most often placed on walls or ceilings, but there are also those that are on columns. Your house or villa can also be lit thanks to garden sconces and ceiling lights. As in the interior, the former are positioned on walls, and the latter on the ceiling.
If we have decided on this type of garden lighting, it is important to think about the location of the electrical switches. We can install them in the house itself, on the terrace, next to the garage or barbecue - i.e. wherever we consider it most convenient to easily adjust the type and amount of illumination. It is a good idea to divide the system into separate groups for the different lighting fixtures in terms of, for example, size. This way, we will be able to turn them on separately. It is important that the garden lighting be separated into a separate network, separate from the house's power supply and have a separate fuse. This way, in the event of possible repair work, we will be able to easily turn off the power.
Practical tips:
- We shouldn't overdo it with lighting fixtures, a little mystery will instill the necessary dose of calm and romance
- LED lighting fixtures have about 50 times longer life than conventional lamps
- We must make sure that there are no visible wires if we have children or pets.
- It is important to only use lighting fixtures that are suitable for outdoor conditions
- Always check the IP rating, which contains numerical information about the degree of protection of the luminaire against dust and water. IP is usually followed by two numbers, the first indicating the possible degree of ingress of solid particles, and the second - the protection against moisture.
