Working with hand tools has its charm, although it does not have the high productivity of machines. The pleasure of work is much greater, the creative element is present, independence is guaranteed. People carry within themselves some kind of primary need to create, to do something with their hands that will leave a mark on the material world. Saws occupy a leading place among hand tools.
Both circular saws and band saws are used for cutting. The main advantages of hand tools over machines are their more affordable prices and the small space they take up. It is also worth noting that working with them can be considered to some extent a touch of art.
Circular saws work very quickly, but if you mess something up, you'll waste material just as quickly. Not so with saws. They're almost always followed by a planer and the cuts have a margin for leveling. Plus, you have time to see that the cut isn't where you want it to be before it's too late.
At the same time, working with a saw is much safer.
When you decide to "arm" your hands and mind with a saw, you need to be aware of exactly what kind you need. That's why we'll introduce you to the types of saws according to their purpose and construction.
TYPES OF SAWS
- Miter saws: These are relatively short saws with a piece of brass or steel pressed into the top of the saw blade to hold it straight. As an added bonus, the weight of the steel or brass spine makes cutting easier because you don't have to push the saw down, allowing you to focus on following the marked line and the desired bevel. Miter saws are saws with finer teeth than the others. They are mainly intended for fine cutting of wood - when making joints for fitting frames and details, etc.
- Long saw: these saws do not have a backbone, so that their cutting depth is not limited. They are used to cut boards and to saw off boards (sawing is cutting in the direction of the grain). If the workpiece you need to cut is thicker than the height of the saw blade or longer than it, you use a long saw.
Because they have no backbone, long saws often bend. If the bend is of a large radius, the "cure" is simply to bend them in the opposite direction until the steel straightens out when it returns to its original shape.
- Carving bow: this is a saw that looks like a bow for a stringed instrument (or a hacksaw). The cutting blade is thin and only the tension in the bow keeps it straight (stretched). With it, you cut curves or holes in flat surfaces. The carving bow cuts with very narrow, finely serrated strips that are stretched between its two arms. It is used for wood carving, cutting thin boards, plywood, etc.
- Frame saw (bull saw): this saw is used for rougher work, most often in construction carpentry for sawing timber. It has a long and narrow cutting band. It works quickly, and can also cut curves with a large radius. The band is clamped at both ends in wooden handles that can rotate in their beds. The saw is held so that the teeth point forward - cutting is done by pushing the saw forward. The band is tensioned by twisting the rope. It can also be rotated at an angle. This makes it possible to follow the cutting line and cut boards lengthwise, without the rope and the middle support getting in the way.
- Narrow saw ("villain"): these are long and narrow saws designed for cutting holes in boards when the distance from the contour of the hole to the edges of the board is too great for the bow of the carving saw to pass through. The "villain" has a very narrow cutting strip at its end, which can be used to cut in curves and can cut holes after the tip is inserted into a pre-drilled hole.
