Waterproofing is undoubtedly one of the most important protective systems for a given facility, which must be foreseen at the design stage. The installation of waterproofing systems should be carried out during construction as a guarantee for good and reliable protection of the structures. An important component of these systems are waterproofing tapes.
WITH WATERPROOFING TAPES YOU WILL PERFECTLY SEAL THE JOINTS
Waterproofing tapes have the ability to seal in an elastic and watertight manner various connecting, expansion, corner and other joints. In general, the use of this product is associated with achieving the best possible final result after laying waterproofing. Waterproofing tapes are used to form deformation joints in ceramic coatings with large areas and on heavily loaded surfaces. Sealing tapes are also used when laying the waterproofing layer when forming a wall/floor and wall/wall corner in wet rooms. They are also used when forming corners on terraces and balconies.
Moisture seepage into the building structure is a problem that must be treated as a serious threat to the quality and long-term operation of the premises. This is due to the many negative effects that can arise as a result of the aggressive influence of water in its various aggregate states. Particularly susceptible to such problems are structures that are in constant contact with moisture and are subjected to permanent water pressure.
WHERE ARE WATERPROOFING TAPES USED?
For the proper operation and reliability of the insulation, it is mandatory to ensure the watertightness of the expansion and working joints. The waterproof joints that are offered are generally elastic water-stopping tapes based on plasticized PVC and serve to seal structural and expansion joints, as well as cracks in concrete structures. Waterproof tapes are most often used for waterproofing structural and expansion joints in concrete structures of buildings and facilities, foundations, underground parking lots, canals, sea dikes, tunnels and culverts, hydroelectric power plants, treatment plants, around steel and concrete pipes, etc., as well as in water-retaining structures, including tanks, canals, irrigation systems, dams, swimming pools. Tapes are also available that serve as joints and finishing details in sheet waterproofing membranes.
Depending on the location where they are installed, water-stopping systems can be external, medium and internal. The strips whose ends are in contact with water, the so-called hydrophilic ends, provide active protection of the joints, while the others serve as passive protection. In systems intended for expansion joints, it is necessary to have compensatory elements that allow for unhindered expansion.
ADVANTAGES OF JOINT SEALING SYSTEMS
The advantages of joint sealing systems are numerous. First of all, modern materials ensure very high durability and preservation of physical and mechanical performance even in adverse weather conditions and aggressive waters. Waterproof joints have high elasticity and are suitable for use in a wide temperature range. They are resistant to many chemicals. The systems are installed easily and quickly, without the need for specialized mechanization. Most often, special adhesives are used or they are welded with hot air, and the installation is carried out according to the manufacturer's specifications. When the strips serve as a finishing detail for sheet waterproofing membranes, one end of the strip is welded to the membrane, and the other is glued to the concrete surface with glue. In the case that the waterproof strips are used as joints for sheet membranes, they are sealed on both sides with hot bitumen. After being placed on the joint, the waterproof strips usually allow uneven and large movements in more than one direction, while maintaining their high sealing performance. The tapes are also effective under strong water pressure, making them suitable even in tunnel construction, where reliable joint sealing is of paramount importance.
BITUMEN STRIPS WITH ALUMINUM FOIL LEAD WATER AWAY FROM THE JOINTS
Another important type of sealing tapes used in construction are self-adhesive bitumen tapes with aluminum foil. These products ensure the elastic sealing of construction joints or other cracks, guaranteeing a quality end result and efficiency. Through their use, wide areas around the joint itself are sealed, which allows overlapping with subsequent coatings. A bitumen tape can lead water away from the sealed joint or crack. That is why thin-layer tapes of elastic material, which are protected by aluminum foil, are used for such purposes. The bitumen base provides water tightness, and the bonding is carried out by pressing the tape.
These tapes are made on the basis of elastomer-modified bitumen. The product is laminated with a strong, weather-resistant aluminum foil, which provides exceptional durability, protection against aging and UV rays. Self-adhesive bitumen tapes have high elasticity and excellent flexibility, as well as very high adhesion strength to many construction substrates and surfaces. They have excellent resistance to weather influences, low and high temperatures (from -10ºС to +80ºС). Last but not least, their advantage is the ease of use.
WHERE ARE BITUMEN STRIPS USED?
Self-adhesive bitumen strips with aluminum foil can be used for sealing cracks in concrete and plaster, repairing broken tiles, covering roof windows, repairing linings around chimneys, repairing gutters and downpipes, covering roofs filled with bitumen tiles or sheets, covering solid parapets, protective coating of insulating materials, sealing bolts passing through the roof surface, sealing ridges, sealing installations passing through the roof and the like.
HOW TO WORK WITH BITUMEN TAPE
Cut a strip of the desired length. Peel off a maximum of 50 mm of the release liner and place the strip in the designated area. Continue to peel off the release liner gradually, pressing the strip firmly against the surface to avoid wrinkles. Make sure that the adhesion is tight and that no air is trapped between the strip and the surface. Using a small roller will ensure better adhesion at the edges and overlaps, which should be at least 25 mm.
