Italian basil is an annual plant with a characteristic odor. Stem erect, branched, quadrangular, short-haired or almost bare. Reaches a height of 30 - 60 cm. In cooking it is used as a spice with wide application in Mediterranean cuisine and as a main ingredient in the preparation of many spaghetti sauces. It is also used as an herb and has antiseptic and analgesic action. Basil is an excellent mosquito repellent.
