The electric angle grinder is one of the most versatile tools in material processing. Both professionals and amateurs from the home craftsman category cannot do their job without it. The characteristic angle in its name comes from the type of reducer, which changes the rotation of the vertical axis of the motor into horizontal rotation of the disk. The two axes are under 90°. The angle grinder is also widely popular under the name Flex.
The status of the machine as a “universal player” in the workshop makes the importance of its choice strategic. Since great hopes are placed on it in doing the job, the device must be of high quality and reliable. We would like to give you some guidelines to make a motivated and informed choice of an angle grinder.
WHAT SHOULD WE PAY ATTENTION TO WHEN CHOOSING AN ANGLE GRINDER?
With an angle grinder, you can cut or grind metals (from thin sheets to thick load-bearing elements), bricks, tiles, concrete, wood, etc. For each type of material, it is necessary to choose the appropriate disc.
- Disc diameter
For cutting small thin sheets, tiles and small metal profiles and for grinding small areas, you can choose a machine that works with a disc with a diameter of 115 or 125 mm. In most cases, the design of these small flexes allows for easy holding and handling. The more universal size is 125 mm, which, in addition to home improvement and hobby applications, is particularly suitable for more accurate and precise work in the professional field.
For cutting and grinding large metal profiles and sheets, for larger tiles and concrete, angle grinders with a larger disc diameter are used - 150, 180 and 230 mm. In all cases, these large tools are manufactured for holding and manipulation with two hands. Of the large cutting tools, those with a diameter of 230 mm are most often used. Diameters 150 and 180 are used for specialized work.
- Motor power
The power of the motor is an extremely important parameter when choosing an angle grinder. This parameter will tell us how productive the flex is, what loads it can withstand and how long its daily use can be. If we choose a growling assistant with a disc diameter of 125 mm for more demanding work, then we should choose one with a power of over 1000 W, and vice versa for small jobs and not so frequent use, a power of 600 W is completely sufficient. For the heaviest loads, we are looking for a professional version with a power of over 1300 W. Here we must not forget that one principle applies - the greater the power, the greater the weight /in most cases, the higher the price/. With prolonged use, a heavy machine leads to hand fatigue, and this is not to be ignored.
For angle grinders with a large disc diameter - 150 to 230 mm, the choice of power is based on the specifics of use and load. The most commonly used are those with a power between 1800 and 2000 W. For extremely heavy loads, those with a capacity of 2300 to 2500 W are also available.
- Security
Particularly important when choosing an angle grinder are the criteria related to ensuring body protection during operation. Manufacturers have taken this into account and all models are sold with a protective cover on the disk, which can be rotated and locked around its axis. The method of locking and its reliability are of particular importance. Many machines have anti-vibration handles that protect the operator from unwanted vibrations. Some of them have protection against restarting.
- Weight and ergonomics
Last but not least, the weight of the flex and the ergonomics of the handles can be decisive when choosing. The trigger button is also important - its location, protection against unintentional activation, and the effort with which we press or push.
- Extras and additions
Most manufacturers equip their devices with additional features that increase security or ensure additional convenience during operation. The advantages are as follows:
Flat gear head – facilitates comfortable work even in tight spaces
Speed selection – pre-setting of speed, smooth or stepless
BOSCH Vibration Control – a system for reducing vibrations, strain and fatigue in the hands
Safety switch – ensures controlled switching on of the machine – for higher protection of the worker
Soft start – Overload protection and starting current limitation
Constant-Electronic – providing constant power when cutting resistance changes
KickBack Stop – turns off when the disc jams
Protection against restarting - if the power is briefly turned off and then turned on again, the disk will not spin by itself.
Quick-tightening nut – a system for manually tightening the nut that presses the disc, without using a special wrench.
